By Christine Masivo Cps

The Provincial House of the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood in Riruta, Nairobi, was filled with a profound sense of reverence and celebration as the sisters together with their brother the congregation of the Mariannhill Missionaries and other faithful gathered to commemorate the death anniversaries of two remarkable visionaries: Abbot Francis Pfanner the founder of the Missionary Sisters of the precious Blood (CPS)  and the congregation of the Mariannhill Missionaries (CMM) and Mother Paula Emunds.

This solemn Mass marked 115 years since Abbot Pfanner’s passing and 76 years since Mother Paula Emunds departed from this world, yet their legacies continue to inspire and guide. The chapel was adorned with vibrant flowers and softly flickering candles, symbolizing the enduring light that Abbot Francis Pfanner and Mother Paula Emunds brought into the world. Members of both the Congregation of the Mariannhill Missionaries (CMM) and the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood (CPS) came together in a colorful and joyous celebration, united in their shared gratitude and mission.

The holy mass was celebrated by Fr. Vincent the Regional superior of the CMM together with other priest co celebrating. Fr. Philip one of the senior priests of the CMM a respected figure within the community, delivered a poignant and heartfelt homily that resonated deeply with all present. Speaking fondly of Abbot Francis Pfanner, he highlighted the founder’s immense zeal for mission and his unwavering dedication to the people of Africa. "Abbot Francis Pfanner was a man driven by an unyielding passion for spreading the fire of Christ's love across Africa," Fr. Philip began. "His vision extended beyond the spiritual realm; he sought to improve the lives of the African people in all spheres—socially, economically, and educationally."

Fr. Philip recounted how Abbot Pfanner’s tireless efforts led to the establishment of numerous missions and educational institutions especially in South Africa. These institutions laid the groundwork for the development and empowerment of many African communities. Abbot Pfanner’s mission was not just about preaching the Gospel; it was about living it through acts of compassion, justice, and solidarity.

Turning his attention to Mother Paula Emunds, the co-foundress of the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood, Fr. Philip spoke of her remarkable contributions. Mother Paula’s gentle strength and unwavering compassion were pivotal in nurturing and expanding the mission. Her leadership helped guide the sisters in their commitment to education, healthcare, and social justice. "Mother Paula Emunds embodied the virtues of humility and service," Fr. Philip reflected. "Her legacy continues to inspire the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood as they carry forward her mission of love and care for those in need."

The Mass was more than a commemoration; it was a celebration of unity and gratitude. Both the CPS and the CMM gathered to thank God for the lives and legacies of Abbot Francis Pfanner and Mother Paula Emunds. Their shared history and mission created a sense of kinship and common purpose among all who attended.

As the Mass concluded, the congregation joined in a heartfelt hymn, their voices blending in a harmonious tribute to Abbot Francis Pfanner and Mother Paula Emunds. The Provincial House, filled with the echoes of prayer and song, stood as a testament to the enduring impact of these visionary founders. In the spirit of Abbot Pfanner and Mother Paula, the members of the CPS and the CMM left the celebration with renewed commitment. They carried forward the legacy of their founders, determined to continue spreading the fire of Christ's love and serving those in need, just as Abbot Pfanner and Mother Paula had envisioned so many years ago.

This celebration in Riruta, Nairobi, was not just a remembrance of the past but a powerful reminder of the ongoing mission. It was a day to honour, to give thanks, and to recommit to the values and vision that Abbot Francis Pfanner and Mother Paula Emunds instilled in their congregations. As the faithful look to the future, the spirits of these two great individuals continue to guide and inspire, lighting the way for new generations of missionaries dedicated to bringing hope, love, and transformation to the world.
