200 Years of Abbot Francis Pfanner Celebration in Langen Austria

In 2025, on 21 September, the 200th anniversary of the birth of Franz (Wendelin) Pfanner (1825–1909) marked a historic era. The visionary missionary and founder whose life of faith and service continues to inspire people across the world.

The jubilee celebration was held in Langen, Austria, the birthplace of Abbot Pfanner, where he first opened his eyes to life two centuries ago. The Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood (CPS) and the Missionaries of Mariannhill (CMM) came together with family descendants, parishioners, and the local community of Langen to honor his legacy in the very village where his journey began. Known for his deep spirituality, courage, and pioneering missionary vision, Pfanner’s life continues to inspire generations across continents.

The presence of both CPS and CMM sisters highlighted the unity of the congregations he founded, showing how his vision of service and missionary zeal has grown and flourished in diverse parts of the world.

For the people of Langen, the commemoration was more than a religious gathering—it was also a celebration of one of their own, whose roots in their soil bore fruit in a mission that touched countless lives globally.

The day was marked with beautiful liturgies, joyful encounters, and moving reflections and skits on Abbot Pfanner’s enduring impact. Born in a small Austrian village, he went on to shape a missionary movement that touched countless lives, building bridges of faith, education, and social transformation. His witness of courage, compassion, and trust in Divine Providence remains a source of strength and hope today.

Two hundred years after his birth, Abbot Francis Pfanner’s legacy is a living testimony to the power of faith and dedication. His courage to respond to the needs of his time, especially in the missions of South Africa, remains a source of inspiration for those who continue to follow in his footsteps.

The bicentenary celebration in Langen was not only a remembrance of history but also a renewal of commitment to carry forward his vision of justice, compassion, and missionary service in today’s world.

By Christine Masivo Cps The Provincial House of the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood in Riruta, Nairobi, was filled with a profound sense of reverence and celebration as the sisters together with their brother the congregation of the Mariannhill Missionaries and other faithful gathered to commemorate the death anniversaries of two remarkable visionaries: Abbot Francis Pfanner the founder of the Missionary Sisters of the precious Blood (CPS)  and the congregation of the Mariannhill Missionaries (CMM) and Mother Paula Emunds. This solemn Mass marked 115 years since Abbot Pfanner’s passing and 76 years since Mother Paula Emunds departed from this world, yet their legacies continue to inspire and guide.
